The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,
A Movie Review,
By Jacob R. Summers
“Dedicated to the people who made it.” When’s the last time you thought about life being about people? About what people do? How they are? Who are they? This world is made up of life. That’s what this life is… Life. However, we forget to live. We forget all about life. Work, drive, eat, sleep; it’s what we do. For what? Can you answer that? Can any of us? Steve Jobs said in a speech one time, “For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘NO’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” What is your life about?
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a movie about life. About pictures and adventures, desire and failure. It’s about a boy who, for good reason, gave up on living his dreams and relinquished himself to a life of visions locked inside. He was a working man, responsible for a family who needed his support. He was an honorable man who wanted to provide. A man who left his adventures behind. Until his dreams caught up with his life. Until adventure forced itself upon him. Until a search found him in a corporate world of downsizing and disappointment, and forced him to come alive.
We all have dreams. We all desire an adventure. For some of us that adventure looks like climbing to the top of the world. For others, maybe just a walk around the block. We all want to feel alive. That’s what adventure is all about. God made us to live, He wants you to live. However, sometimes life itself seems to suck the life out of us. We’re relegated to the mundane. At least that’s how we see it. We look at the pictures in the famous magazines and wish somehow to get closer. We’re looking at real life, we imagine. But what about your life, your life just the way it is. If someone could capture it on film. If it were put on a cover or in a movie; could it be beautiful? I think so. I think so, because there is life in you, no matter what you think. I know there is life in you. You can choose to see it beautifully, or you can change it. You can see the value in it, or you can add value to it. Sadly, sometimes it doesn’t feel that way. We all need to be inspired. Inspired to live, to love, and just be. That’s why I love this movie by Ben Stiller. It inspires us to adventure. To see the value of what we do. To see life. To see love. “Dedicated to the people who made it.”
