“Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the future, act now, without delay.” – Simone de Beauvoir
The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel!, Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening. – 1 Samuel 3:10
Listenable: “Agreeable to listen to” – Merriam-Webster Dictionary
“Samuel, Samuel,” the boy heard. Three times he heard these words of calling. Three times he went to his boss to see what he had been called for. Three times his boss told him he hand’t called. But on the third time he was told to listen and answer a higher calling. So when he heard “Samuel, Samuel,” for the fourth time he answered to the true caller with the words, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” From that time on, the Bible says, “The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and He let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. And all of Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet from the LORD.” – 1 Samuel 3:19-20 I wonder what God is calling you to do. I wonder if we’re listening when He calls our names. I wonder if we’re even willing to answer. God may not call us in the way He called Samuel, but He doubtlessly calls us to something. That something is simply to live for Him. But what does that mean? What does that even look like? For starters, it may look like responsible driving on our way to work. It may look liking working hard for the people who pay us. And for some it may look like entering the mission field for a life of self sacrificing service. What it will look like for you I have no idea. However, I know God has a calling for you. If you think you haven’t heard it, start by asking Jesus into your life, get close to Him, and listen. Listen for the calling of your name. Then say, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” But this is where people get scared. We all imagine Abraham being asked to sacrifice his son Isaac. But remember, the point of the story is that God would never ask for something like that. Don’t worry, God will not call you to something you are unable to accomplish. He won’t ask you to compromise the morals He’s given you. And He will never leave you unhappy and unsatisfied with a life lived for Him. Having said that, it’s not easy, God isn’t always very listenable. It’s not easy for me, and it won’t be for you. That’s why I continually pray for the courage to follow Him. That’s why I pray for you as well. I pray that God calls all of us to a life unmatched in reward and joy. I pray that He gives us all the courage to say yes to a life like that. And I pray that when He calls He will be able to say, “There you are!”
